Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do you measure the dimensions of a textile?
A textile, especially a knit or braid construction, has a stretchiness or spring not unlike the sleeve of your sweater. In order to achieve a consistent measurement it is best to place the product under some predetermined tension. Alternatively, the length may be specified in terms of picks/inch for a braid, or courses/inch for a knit.
What is the difference between Industrial and Aerospace grade Silco Sleeve®
The Industrial grade has a knitted fiberglass substrate and is the more commonly specified product for use with hydraulic and pneumatic hose assemblies and wire allows qualified hose assemblies to pass SAE Standard AS1055 under stated flow and pressure conditions.
What is the temperature rating of silicone rubber?
The silicone rubber formulation used in our Silco Sleeve® and Silco Tape products is rated continuously to 500°F. It will withstand a molten splash of metal at 2,200° F.
What is the largest diameter of Silco Sleeve that you manufacture?
The largest nominal ID is currently 5 inches. To cover hose diameters in excess of 5 inches we recommend the use of our
Silco Tape® product, which may be spiraled around the hose, or our
Silco Shield® Velcro® closure is available in almost limitless size configurations.
Is Silco Sleeve available in colors?
The standard product, which we inventory, is available in iron oxide red. Subject to a minimum order we supply yellow, black, silver gray, blue and green and are happy to consider additional colors.
What is the largest/smallest diameter available in your clip gasket?
Typical gasket diameters range from .420 - .560 inches (10-15 mm). Additionally, the knitted wire bulb within the gasket can be constructed with diameters of .004 - .007 inches (.10 - .18 mm) wire in order to vary the compressive strength of the gasket.
What limitations are there to the spacing between the clips in your high temperature gasket?
The minimum spacing between clips is 40mm. The maximum spacing is determined by the practical considerations of the design layout.
What is the difference between “soft” and “dense” rope?
Unfortunately, there is no empirical answer to this question. Simply put, for a given diameter, dense rope contains more fiberglass per foot than soft rope. Because of the design constraints of manufacturing knitted rope, densities vary from size to size. When selecting a rope to fit your particular needs it is best to experiment with several sizes and densities in order to select the best product for your application.
What is the largest size rope available?
When constructing large diameter ropes we will build the diameter by utilizing smaller, standard size ropes. One rope will be utilized as the core with other ropes surrounding it. This grouping will then be overbraided with fiberglass to form the final construction. We have manufactured ropes up to 5 inches in diameter and have used this approach to combine various sizes into oblong and square configurations as well
What is the temperature rating of fiberglass?
The type E fiberglass used in most of our products is rated continuously to
1,000°F. (538°C). It will soften at 732-877°C and melts at 1121-1182°C.
